McDonald's McFlurry spoon has hidden feature – and people are only just discovering it

Send Push

McDonald's iconic frozen dessert, the McFlurry, has been a staple on the menu since 1998.

Over the years, it has seen several changes to its packaging and many variations have come and gone, including collaborations with confectionery giants such as Cadbury, Nestle and Mars.

However, one aspect of the product that seems to have slipped under the radar is the unique plastic spoon which accompanies each frozen treat. A recent Instagram post featuring a snap of a McFlurry - spoon included - sparked confusion with the caption: "Is this a straw or some kind of eating device?"

The puzzled customer's post eventually found its way to X, formerly Twitter, where fast food enthusiasts were ready to provide an explanation.

"It's quite literally a drill bit spoon," revealed one X user. "They attach that spoon to a machine through that hole and it stirs the McFlurry to get a perfect mix. That way, they both save on having to clean a stirring tool on every serving and they don't waste the ice cream that would get stuck on it."

This was corroborated by another person, who added: "We all wondered thus at some point. Its cool design because the spoon becomes the mixer as well."

Scores of others were up in arms over the Golden Arches gadget, however, insisting it was nothing more than a spoon - at best a spoon and straw combined. But further McDonald's experts hit back revealing its true purpose.

"Spoon made for use as the blender attachment used for mixing," responded one person, adding: "Saves on time, labour steps, and machine cost. It is not in fact designed to be used as a straw."

And a second confirmed: "If you've ever seen them make one that thing clicks onto the machine and that's how they blend stuff into the ice cream. It's like that to attach to the spindle piece."

McDonald’s UK menu tasted change last month, with the Milkybar Raspberry Ripple and Munchies Cookie Dough McFlurry along with the Mini McFlurry options removed.

In their place, fans spotted the newbie Galaxy Chocolate McFlurry and Twix Chocolate McFlurry costing £2.19 and £1.59 for the regular and smaller sizes respectively. These join the classic line-up of Maltesers, Oreo and Smarties which are lighter on the wallet at £1.69 and £1.19.
